Angkasawan nothing more than lab rat

We've been bombarded by all sorts of cheerleading news about our Angkasawan's progress. For eg. this ridiculous report from Malaysiakini about eating Hari Raya goodies in space.

I'm no Houston Mission Commander, but aren't their diets very, very tightly controlled?

I'm pretty sure that astronauts (and space flight participants) really... REALLY don't need a bout of diarrhea in space. Especially when there's no gravity to make sure everything ends up neatly in the toilet bowl, instead of say.., the ceiling or smeared all over your arse. And the time it takes to get out a space suit will probably feel like an eternity when barbarians are at the door, and you really need to take a crap... and take it right now.

Anyway, here's something more interesting I read from Bernama about the details of our Angkasawan's "research".

Malaysian astronaut Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha, who is currently at the International Space Station (ISS), is also assisting the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in their research.
OK, sounds good so far.
National Angkasawan Programme Director Col Dr Zulkeffeli Mat Jusoh said the research involved the effects of microgravity and solar radiation on the astronaut's body system.
And that's the first clue that our spaceman is not conducting research as such, but merely subjecting his own body to 'research'.

It goes downhill from there...
"The ESA research is on the effects of microgravity on the back portion of the body, movement perception, resilience before and after the ISS trip and the stability of visibility and the body," he told Bernama when contacted in Moscow today.
Effects of microgravity on the back portion of the body... got any back pain?

Movement perception... how's your hand eye coordination?

Resilience before and after the ISS trip... any changes to your health due to the space flight, Mr participant?

Stability of visibility... any blurry vision? Double vision? Cross-eyed?

Stability of the body... can stand and walk straight?
The JAXA study is on the level of exposure to radiation by the astronaut in space.

"JAXA introduced a gadget which is placed in the astronaut's shirt pocket to study the radiation level," he said.
Put a rad sensor in your pocket and THAT'S IT? I mean, how complicated is that? Isn't the sole requirement for successfully 'conducting this research' simply remembering to wear a shirt that has a pocket?

Heck, I'm no expert on the intricate techniques of space bound research.., but it sure sounds to me like our Angkasawan is no more than a convenient test subject on which to conduct some physiological experiments into the effects of space travel on humans.

A crash test dummy, a laboratory rat, a Durex condom tester, a tube of glucose gel to grow a colony of fungus in. He's subject matter rather than subject expert.

And we PAID 95 million ringgit for the privilege of being experimented on like Bubbles the chimp?!

Majulah Program Angkasawan Nasional. Damn, I'm proud. Aren't you?

Thumbs up for our Malaysian "space tourist" for spinning a top in outer space and sharing his raya goodies with other international austronauts. Just waiting to see his 95 million teh tarikh stint which our local mamak can do for 95 sen.

I just cant make it? what is the fuss is all about?

Are u one of the astronauts wanna be who failed the first test?

If u are no experts than keep your fucking mouth and keyboard shuts!

Reading from your writing (previously) I am sure you are one of those guys who promote meritocracy... bla.. blaa.. who worship Kuan Yew style..

I bet you would praise the space program is a Malaysian Chinese is on board... Knowing people like you anything that non-malays do is great and is based on perception of meritocracy!!

Or probably.. u didnt notice that the team who operated that little chinese gal heart was all malays..

Yeah all of them are malays.. Malaysian malays that u always criticize for not being competent!!!

If u are no experts than keep your fucking mouth and keyboard shuts!

Yours is the typical mentality of a katak bawah tempurung. Since when do you need to be an 'expert' to speak up?

1. Who defines who the experts are?

2. The day only experts pay income tax, is the day I shut up.

Reading from your writing (previously) I am sure you are one of those guys who promote meritocracy... bla.. blaa.. who worship Kuan Yew style..

I agree with many of Lee Kuan Yew's thoughts about meritocracy. That's no secret. I don't think that's called worship.

And why are you so against meritocracy? Are you lacking merit?

Was there anything RACIAL in any of my postings of the Space Flight Participant? Are you being overly sensitive OR are you just attempting to put words in my mouth, so as to justify your little tirade against the Chinese?

As for my criticizing ONLY the Malays... that cannot be further from the truth.

I did not blog then, but many automotive forums will be able to attest to my criticisms of Alex Yoong and his dismal F1 stint.

When it comes to spending money on stupid ventures in particular and stupidity in general, I'm an equal opportunity critic.

And if you take the time to read what I write carefully, I seldom criticise the personalities (unless it's a politician or 'leader') but rather it is their actions.

Dear Anonymous,

The moment you keep putting your hands out asking for hand outs, you do not have to right to feel insulted as you had felt.

Every moment that you are not competing on a level playing field with the rest, you are nothing but an unworthy person and do not deserve to stand head and shoulders with the rest.

Everyday that you are protected by your NEP, you are an unworthy opponent.

So shut up and enjoy your privileges or else, reject your privileges and compete fairly. That way, you will EARN the right to be respected. As it is now, you are nothing but playing in a football team of 15 players against 11 players with the goal post widen by 5 feet in your favor. Tell me, Does that make you a worthy winner? Does that make you an worthy opponent? Does that makes you proud to face your parents and/or family?

The real scientists on board the space station must be sniggering at our space tourist who paid US$25mil to be a guinea pig.

Over-exposure to solar radiation can also affect sperm count and fertility. Hope someone warned him to take precautions before he finds his family jewels irradiated.

Dear Anoymous,

1st it is not nice to come in to bloggers website and curse around.

2nd, whatever sean is saying is not against malay , chinese or indian. It is mostly against the government and unfortunately it is ruled mostly by malays

3rd, you have to accept the fact is that there are too much unfairness in Malaysia and it is no way for you to ask us shut up. No doubt, not all malays are not good, but there are minumum malays whom are competitive and smart. Most of them are mostly protected by all the rules & benefits.

lastly, we have to accept that racism happens at everywhere but malaysia tends to be more and obvioius. I would rather stay in Aust as PR but still able to enjoy the benefits like other white guys. Pls be believe me because i had been staying is US in past 7 years and even though i'm considered foreigner, but the benefits is not that different from other regular citizens

Pls respect the view and make your jugdement with facts and truth. dont simply come in and curse around. Good job to the doctors regardless it is chinese, malay or indians.

sean-the-man said...

Since someone brought up the fact that all the doctors in IJN operating on Tee Hui Yee were Malays... perhaps we should take a step back and question why there were only Malay doctors in that team... and in fact in the entire IJN generally. Where are the Chinese and Indian doctors?

Here's one doctor's opinion, which I coincidentally stumbled across tonight in Fung Po Kuan's blog..., on why only Malay doctors were available to help Hui Yee at IJN.

i managed to secure myself a place in medicine in University Malaya. I am now a doctor. Even being a doctor now, i could see how our bumiputras colleagues are getting all the benefits (in term of promotion, special trainee lecturer programme .. even our IJN nowadays are saturated with malay doctors .. what happened to our chinese peers?) I would love to stay in Malaysia to contribute to Malaysians .. but the system here fails me miserably. I do not see my future in this country.

Sigh... it's ironic as well as deeply disappointing, how even charity and kindness has its unintended roots in racism and discrimination.

Dear Sean

i would like to say that i think you are a very racially biased person. i've enjoyed reading your blog for some time now, but going through them, i cant help but thinking you are just being racist to the silliest of extent

it seams to you, like it is only the malays who are the bad people in this country. if any of you cared to look, you only comment (more like bashing them senseless most of the time) on the ugly side of the malays. to you it seems there are next to no vile chinese and indians

don't you know that almost all that runs the gangsters network, prostitution ring, pirated goods ring, smuggling of illegal equipments are chinese? i should know, because i have people who work with the kongsi gelap dept of the police force. why dont you blog about them? and i dont hear you complaint about samy vellu to much.and you dont make alot of noise about mca being umno's lapdog nor do you support dap's causes. you neither support nor detract them.

is it because you have nothing to report about them when actually in reality there are much to report? you just choose to keep mostly quiet. just reporting about alex yoong is not enough. instead you choose only to report on the malays, albeit only the bad ones. why?

when the police 1st found the girls' body in the bag, when they still had not identified the body and there are talks that she might not be a malaysian, you post a report about that, WITH a 2nd photo showing a card that read "malaysians will not let you die in vain" (i actually tought you were showing some heart here)

but when they confirmed that the girl in the bag was nurin, you didn't give a damn to report about that nor do you care to reply the comment that a reader posted. why? is it because she's a malay? (another malay died right? what joy!!!) a life taken is a life taken, malay or no malay.

god knows that i agree with you that there are unjust law and people in this country. by why exaggerated? i mean its ok to comment and criticise, but whats with giving people names and showing so much hatred? we should practice self refrain, and not abuse our freedom to talk

can you name 1 country that have it everything perfect? neither can i. we are all human, and all human are inherently flawed.

god knows its just unfair that it is mostly the malays who get the scholarship. because of that all my kids have to study extra hard to earn their place in universities, even though there are no guarantees. but you should know, eventhough its only mostly the malays that get the scholarship, there are a whole LOT more who are left to fend for them self. those middle achiever who didn't able to get them but want to improve them self. why criticise those who got them, when there are 75%+ who dont? and there are a way lot more malay students than the others combine. so there are roughly the same amount of bumis and non bumis who dont get a scholarship.

and yes, there are alot more privileges that only the malays get, loans, work perks and stuff. but why complain? they are here for already 3000 years, way before we 1st came. we are still basically a foreigner in someone else land, even if we and a number of our ancestors are born here. if an owner of a house and a stranger stays together, and the stranger gave birth to a child, would the stranger and the child have the same status as the owner? no. he could choose to give, or even not.

you should be somewhat proud that we had our merdeka, and that the malays choose to "share power" with the others, eventhough at a very limited level. if we didn't had our merdeka, we would still be under british rule, and they ONLY recognize the malays as the original inhabitant of malaya and they only consult with their sultans. do you think we would fare better under them? don't you think we should atlest remember what we have and not only just what we want? i bet you would just love to see the chinese overthrow the malay and make malaysia another singapore, am i right?

more than one country have these or some other types of control on their people. yes it might not be right, but it does happens. other country have dealt with it, china, india and the former ussr did the same, they control their people and suppressed and protect them to an extent.the ussr was the 2nd of the only 2 superpower back then, and china's and india's economy is booming.

and your reply on the 2nd post about hui yee. why you need to post about all the chinese doctors choose to leave malaysia? a live saved is a live saved, malay doctors or not! you are saying as if, if there are a malay, a chinese, a indian doctor on site, the chinese doctor will be the one who help her because both are chinese and the other 2 doctor will just keep quiet unless it is really an emergency! if an israeli doctor will treat a palestinian patient without question, why should we? why should you add more salt to an already salty soup with that comment? why?

you know, i've longed for the old days. when we were is school, there were no group based on races or believes. we were ALL a group, chinese, malay, indian, punjabi you name it. tolerant was the name of the game. where i could just wait in the living room of my friend while he went to pray. and that he could even accompany me to a restaurant that sells pork without squirming. live and let live as they say it.

and with people like you we have to depends our future upon, i really dont know where we are heading. i really hope and pray that you grow more mature, and see things in both lights and not only in just one.

lastly, im sorry for the long post, but i just want you to hear toughts from others, without any intentions to offence

cheers!

>>>>>

Firstly, please quote me or post a link to a post where I've said that Malays are the only bad people in the country.

Secondly, there is a search box on the upper left corner or bottom of the sidebar on the right. Do a search for 'Samy' or 'MCA' whatever. There are 456 posts in this blog and I don't think you've gone through each and every one.

But for sure, UMNO, the UMNO dominated govt and their antics take the top spot for posts in this blog. Why? Because UMNO makes all the decisions that affect the lives of Malaysians. MCA and MIC... well, they're just along for the ride, aren't they?

And be fair. Am I targeting the Malay race, or am I targeting UMNO and the Religious Authorities (where they intrude into the lives of non-Muslims)? Or are you of the opinion that there is no separation between the Malay race, UMNO and the govt?

Thirdly, I don't report the gangsters or the triads. 3 reasons...

(1) They DO NOT collect income tax! Protection money yes... but income tax no. And they DO NOT make laws and change the Constitution. I can choose to have nothing to do at all with organised crime in Malaysia but I cannot do so with the govt and UMNO.

(2) If you read Malaysia-Today, you will read that the gangsters are in collusion with the authorities. And who are those authorities?

(3) What kind of blog postings would you like to see on gangsterism? Bearing in mind that I'm not an undercover cop, not an investigator nor investigative journalist?

Besides telling the Police to buck up and go catch some bad guys, what can a man who doesn't gamble, doesn't frequent prostitutes, doesn't buy illegal contrabrand and doesn't borrow money from ahlongs blog about gangsters?

Lastly, DAP. When they finally in a position to make policy, laws and spend my tax money, and generally have some impact on the lives of Malaysians, I'll start paying attention to them.

>>>>>Anonymous said... is it because you have nothing to report about them when actually in reality there are much to report? you just choose to keep mostly quiet. just reporting about alex yoong is not enough. instead you choose only to report on the malays, albeit only the bad ones. why?>>>>>

I'm not a news agency. I don't endeavour to report 'everything'. In fact, I don't report. I comment.

And since I have a a full time job and then some, to put food on the table, I choose to limit my commentary on issues and happenings that I think have an impact on Malaysians in general, and on me in particular.

And like you said, we are all human. I have my pet peeves and favourite issues like everyone else. And mine are simple. RACE, RELIGION, NEP. And my stand has always been TOTAL EQUALITY AND EQUAL RIGHTS for all Malaysians.

And again be fair. Is it that I choose to report only on the Malays... or is it because UMNO has the overwhelmingly largest impact on the lives of Malaysians, and UMNO is unabashedly Ketuanan Melayu?

>>>>>Anonymous said... when the police 1st found the girls' body in the bag, when they still had not identified the body and there are talks that she might not be a malaysian, you post a report about that, WITH a 2nd photo showing a card that read "malaysians will not let you die in vain" (i actually tought you were showing some heart here)

but when they confirmed that the girl in the bag was nurin, you didn't give a damn to report about that nor do you care to reply the comment that a reader posted. why?
>>>>>

OK. Read my piece about Nurin again. It was a commentary about the monsters who committed the crime and the police who couldn't catch them. It was not a hand wringer agonising over her identity. To me, her identity, and her ethnicity was not the issue. If Malaysia was a safer country, she wouldn't be dead at all whatever her race.

So, when they found out the Nurin was indeed Nurin... you are faulting me for "NOT reporting" that Nurin was actually Nurin? That news was reported by virtually every newspaper, TV station, radio station and internet news site. What possible additional comment could I add that would warrant a new posting?

Here's that reader's comment to my posting on Nurin:

"DNA has confirmed the little girl as Nurin Jazlin, the missing 9 year old from Wangsa Maju.

Bless her little soul..."

What would you have me reply? What could I add to that? The comment has already said eloquently what needed to be said.

>>>>>Anonymous said... is it because she's a malay? (another malay died right? what joy!!!) a life taken is a life taken, malay or no malay.>>>>>

This comment is rubbish, uncalled for and you know it, buster.

Exaggeration... in what way?

Name calling... I have my quirks when I write, I guess.

Hatred... for the abusive, corrupt and blasphemous (those who speak on behalf of god), YES. For a race... NO.

Like I've said a THOUSAND TIMES (even if I only have 456 postings). NOBODY begrudges aid to the poor and disadvantaged. But right now there are 2 great injustices that you have chosen to ignore.

1. RICH bumis are getting the scholarships. And I suspect, the best and most expensive scholarships go to the rich exclusively.

2. The poor and disadvantaged non-bumis (like many poor and disadvantaged bumis) are completely cut out of the scholarship system. How can you live with yourself, much less condone it?

Why criticise the rich Malays who receive scholarships and the govt that gives it to them?

How the hell can you not?!

I am a believer in the democratic system of majority and a moralistic democracy limits the power of the majority in the form of minority rights and safeguards against the tyranny of the majority.

I would love to see those who play fair, are not corrupt and understand what human rights and basic human decency is all about take the reins of power in this country. I do not believe in a racial solution.

Simple. In response to 'Anonymous' who brought it up as a moral argument that Chinese were ungrateful to the Malays.

Read my response again. Was I saying that "if there were Malay, Chinese and Indian doctors in IJN, only the Chinese doctors will help her"? Or was I lamenting why there weren't any Chinese and Indian doctors in IJN at all due to our education and civil service?

Each and every point you mentioned about the old days has been taken away from us by the very people whom this blog seeks to highlight and cut down to size.

I believe that there are certain basic and crucial values that a decent person CANNOT COMPROMISE on.

One of those is the basic human right to equal treatment under the law and in society regardless of his/her position, ethnicity and religion.

Another is equal reward for equal effort or work.

Like a close friend called Thundercow, quotes to me...

"In matters of Style, swim with the current. In matters of Principle, stand like a rock - Thomas Jefferson".

No, thank you. I sincerely appreciate the feedback and critique.

To the NEW anonymous )or the same anonymous), i really can't help myself but need to comment one of your serious info , here is

"and yes, there are alot more privileges that only the malays get, loans, work perks and stuff. but why complain? they are here for already 3000 years, way before we 1st came. we are still basically a foreigner in someone else land, even if we and a number of our ancestors are born here. if an owner of a house and a stranger stays together, and the stranger gave birth to a child, would the stranger and the child have the same status as the owner? no. he could choose to give, or even not."

I can't believe you still think that chinese and indians are foreigners and malays are local. If you think as a malaysian, chinese/indians are the malaysian , not some sort of foreginers or whatever. If you still thinking in that way, what is the point we call ourselves as malaysian? 2nd, regarding the merdeka, it is fair to say all the races fight for the that and every races put into the effort. To the certain extend, like you say malays deserve some sort of privilges, but the issue is somehow getting out of control and more ppl are educated with understanding of human right and fairness, that's how the country should evolve to be more competive to the higher level. If you are 'smart' enough to look at the overall situation and think globally, the bloggers are not targetting on the malays but more to the government and unfortuantely mainly ruled by malays.

More on topic a bit, I just think that the so-called experiments that
the Angkasawan was doing up there are completely ridiculous. I seriously
do not think that during the decades that men had already gone to space,
them Americans, Russians etc. had never conducted such simple experiments
or more accurately, I wouldn't even call them experiments, just simple observations.

Therefore, even though our politicians tried to justify the benefits of sending a Malaysian to space (other than it being a mere novelty), by talking about these experiments and how serious and complicated they
are (bla bla), what value have we added to space research as a whole? I haven't done any research on this, but I seriously think that these experiments have been done by other ppl who have gone to space before. Imagine the other astronauts on board the space station chuckling
behind our angkasawan when he is doing his 'experiments' while thinking in
their minds 'Haha, our predecessors have already done those experiments 3 decades ago!'. I think this is our most serious case of 'SYOK
SENDIRI' ever! What advancements have we brought to the table? What can our Angkasawan hope to achieve in one week's time up there compared to
the other astronauts who stays up there 6 months at a time? We are just
merely repeating the shenenigans that we have done here all this while. We
take someone else's theory, add some local flavour to it and call it a ground-breaking new thing. We make up a 'Malaysian Book of Records'
simply for this reason. We can't hope or rather we are not committed enough
to set legitimate records or achievements. So, we create something else
to enable us to indulge in more 'SYOK SENDIRI' goodness.
The politicians invited an ex-NASA astronaut to makan-makan with them
during the launch. And that guy says that he considers our angkasawan
to
be a full-fledged Astronaut. Erm.. OK. He was invited over on a
First-Class flight ticket, accomodation taken care of, wined and
dined at
our expenses. What else is he gonna say??? Try to create a riot here
by
saying 'Sorry Malaysians, I dun consider your handsome-boy to be a
real
Astronaut'???

I am one who is against our country's 'affirmative action policy',
but I
wouldn't argue the cons of this Angkasawan program using it. This is
more
about an event that some politician cooked up to entertain us and
throw
our attention off more important issues like the lawyer-brokering and
wastage of public funds in the Auditor-General's report (not to
mention
the obvious fact that some parties have surely profitted from this
thing).

Wake up Malaysia! The world is laughing at us! We have to stop all
this
'SYOK SENDIRI' crap now! We should recognize that our Angkasawan
program
even with all the hoo-haa stuffed into it, is closer to being a space
tourism event, rather than a errr... 'space program'. I'm embarrassed
to
even mention those two words. We do not have a space program. We do
not
have a launch facility, this angkasawan is not even trained by us,
and he
ain't even welcomed on the space station for more than 2 weeks. Talk
about
pathetic. And as much as I feel sorry for that poor bloke who didn't
get
to go to space after all the training (probably due to his genes
skewed
lesser towards good looks), we should not spend one extra cent on
anything
related to this 'space program' anymore, until we have at least
eradicated
poverty from our nation.
